SYNOPSIS.
Buckle Your Bible Belts!
"Marketing the Message" rides along as Christian evangelism becomes moreeffective by adopting marketing strategies from the commercial advertisingworld. A Jesus bobblehead - blasphemy, or a great way to teach kids aboutthe Gospel? Husband and wife filmmakers, Joe and Kate Bly take a road
trip from Washington. D.C. to Orlando, Florida surveying ways in whichChristian evangelism is stepping up its marketing campaign and rebrandingitself to fit mainstream pop culture.
They find a Christian skateboarding tour, hip Christian accessories forteens, and a preaching wrestler who has a tag-team partner in Jesus. Thedebate is joined by commercial marketers, pastors, and plain folks. Author David Dark provides commentary and critique as NASCAR fansdistribute racing bibles and the Holy Land Experience, a bible themedpark, pushes the envelope of faith-based entertainment. The tone isrefreshingly fair and respectful, but not afraid to ask whether it'sdeception, cheapening, or charged by the Apostles.
"Marketing the Message" challenges the viewer to have a productivediscussion about the direction of evangelism in this moment in Americawithout rehashing culture war debates. The angle is new and the oldcountry church will never be the same.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR. Joe Bly founded his production company Powder Keg Republic, LLC in the fall of 2004 to produce documentaries for television, institutions, and the music industry. Growing up in the farm country of Rockingham County, Virginia, he became known locally for shooting and directing video projects for school. In 2000 he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with degrees in history and film studies with extra course work from the state film institute FAMU in Prague, Czech Republic, and the Pittsburgh Filmmakers, the hub of the filmmaking community in Pittsburgh. The thriving Pittsburgh arts scene provided an outlet for his video work and he found freelance jobs at a local production company by pretending he already worked there.
Giving in to wanderlust, Joe and his future wife Kate Rushefsky earned certification to teach English as a second language and lived a year in Volgograd, Russia, a longtime goal of Joe's. Upon returning to the States Joe was hired as an Associate Producer at WVPT-PBS in Harrisonburg, Virginia. There he co-produced "A Life of Peace in a Time of War," a one hour historical documentary about religious conscientious objectors of WWII.
In 2003 Joe and Kate were married and resettled in Queens, New York where Joe researched for PBS Frontline Producer Helen Whitney. Her programs "The Millennial Pope," and special on the Mormon faith were influencial in furthering his interest in religious themed documentaries. In 2006 Joe and Kate under Powder Keg Republic completed his first independent title "Marketing the Message," a short program about the commercialism of Christian evangelism. Joe is currently developing future films, including a story about the revival of a near-extinct folk instrument. More travel will also figure prominently in upcoming projects.
